Suginami City

Project to Create and Use a Walking Map

~Promoting a Project Using a Walking App~

Project Overview (Background & Purpose)

Suginami City enacted the Suginami City Health Promotion Ordinance in July 2014 with the aim of achieving a long-lived, healthy community where all residents could make use of connections with society and remain healthy and energetic throughout their lives.
In order to achieve the goal of “increasing the number of steps in daily life” under the provisions of the ordinance, the city is striving to improve health with resident participation by creating a walking map, making use of an app, and holding health seminars and walking events, for example.

Details of Project

Using an App to Make “Walking” a Habit Enjoyably
Created a walking map from FY2016 with the aim of getting people who did not really have a regular habit of exercising to gradually form the habit of exercising by starting with lighter exercise, like walking, and preventing lifestyle diseases and improving lifestyle, among other aims. The walking map is distributed at the Suginami Public Health Center and other health centers, and is also distributed at events relating to lifestyle disease prevention, etc., to make it widely known among residents.
Further, to help people living and working in the city (particularly those in age groups where lack of exercise is concerning (30 to 74)) form the habit of enjoying walking, the city is making use of an app containing information from the walking map and is encouraging a wide range of ages to make walking a habit.

Creating a Video Introducing the Walking Map

Holding Health Seminars and Walking Events
Held health seminars and walking events for people living and working in Suginami.
Aim to have participants understand that walking is an easy type of exercise to start, even during COVID-19, and to have them form a habit of walking by enjoying walking using the step counting app, etc. while learning about safe walking methods.

Reviews of Participants

Health Seminars and Walking Events

  • You see all kinds of health techniques on TV and in magazines, but I think it’s important to have a thorough understanding before putting it into practice. I think I can link this session to practice.
  • I looked back on how lazily I usually walked. I want to try actually walking with the guide to the recommended walking courses.

Comments from the Person in Charge (challenges, inventive points and future plan)

Health Seminars and Walking Events

  • Carried out a whole-year walking campaign based on Suginami Walking using the app. Many commented about the lack of opportunities for exercise during COVID-19, and although it was partly because quotas were reduced to prevent infection, the response that quotas filled soon after opening was pleasing.
We hope to continue multilayered efforts, such as practical classes using social media or face-to-face.
