The central part of the present Machida City was the old Hon-Machida-mura. Hon-Machida-mura was divided in 1582 to Hara-Machida-mura and Oya-mura.
In the two villages, Machida-tenmangu Shrine and Minami-Oya-tenjinsha Shrine, which enshrined Michizane Sugawara as the main deity the same as Sugawara-jinja Shrine – a shrine for the local deity of Hon-Machida-mura, were built. These three shrines are called Machida San Tenjin (Machida Three Tenjin Shrines).
