What should I be aware of purchasing takeout food such as box lunches or delivery meals?


Eat as soon as you can after you get takeout food or have meals delivered. If you can't eat right away, keep it in the refrigerator.

Takeouts and delivery increases the risk of food poisoning because the risk of bacteria capable of causing food poisoning increases as time passes. Pay special attention during hot weather.

You should pay special attention to the following food poisoning prevention measures when purchasing takeout food such as box lunches or delivery meals.


[When purchasing or ordering]

- Buy only the amount that be consumed immediately.

- Check the consumption expiration date and method of preservation on box lunch labels. If not labeled, check with the staff for guidelines on how soon it must be eaten or advice about carrying and preservation.


[When purchasing takeout food]

- When shopping, wait to purchase takeout food last; do not carry it around with you at room temperature for an extended period of time.

- When using a cold pack, it works better if you place it on top the box, etc. Cooler bags are even more effective.


[When having meals delivered]

- Make sure to have it delivered when you are at home; do not allow box lunches, etc., to remain outdoors. Also, if you do not receive the food directly from delivery person, take the food in as soon as it’s delivered.

- If you notice anything out of the ordinary, such as the container or packaging is damaged or that the food that requires refrigeration not sufficiently refrigerated, contact the seller before eating.


[When eating]

- Always wash your hands before eating.

- Eat box lunches, etc., as as soon as possible. If you can't eat right away, keep it in the refrigerator. If reheating, heat it so the center is sufficiently heated in a microwave oven, etc.
