How do pesticide residues and food additives in and on foods affect children?

  • Why are the limits for these substances the same for adults and children?

The limits for pesticide residue and food additives are established while taking into account differences due to age and sex.Accordingly, the amounts of these substances ordinarily used with foods are safe even for children.

More information

The limits for pesticides and food additives are set at amounts that would be safe even if consumed every day throughout a person’s life based on experiments with animals.
More specifically, based on the differences between people and animals, the limits for maximum amounts are set at one tenth the maximum amount found not to have an effect in animal experiments. Further, given individual differences such as age and sex in people, one tenth of that value is set as the level which has no effect on humans.
Limits for residual amounts are set based on the above value while also taking into consideration common eating habits.
